My mind is always swirling with ideas, but few have stayed with me as long as the dream of collaborating with another artist—creating jewelry inspired by their universe while staying true to my own. When I finally reached out to Olivia Faust, I knew I had found the perfect match.
Her work is distinctive yet versatile—goth, kitsch, chic, and wonderfully spontaneous. She doesn’t fit neatly into any box, and that’s exactly what drew me to her world. Translating her eerie-sweet aesthetic into jewelry was a thrilling challenge, and the collection that emerged feels like the perfect fusion of both our styles.
Meet Olivia Faust
Fellow Canadian, Olivia Faust is a multidisciplinary artist who blends dark whimsy and vintage nostalgia into a world that’s uniquely hers.
Inspired by folklore, horror and vintage kitsch she also has a very unique colour palette that makes her work feels both otherworldly and oddly familiar.
To celebrate this collection, I asked Olivia a few fun questions—things you won’t find on her bio page;
If you could live in any decade, which would it be and why?
Aesthetically speaking, I think I'd have to say the 1960's! They really did have the best style. I am a huge lover of British mod fashion, and 60's dandy fashion. I adore colour and the 60's were so colourful! It's also my favourite era for makeup. My go-to everyday makeup includes a mod eyeshadow look, with lots of mascara on my bottom lashes. Twiggy is the whole reason why all the people I paint always have such prominent bottom lashes!
Really, everything was made more beautifully back then; the cars, the houses, the music, the films, even the store signage - it was a time of such whimsical beauty.
What kind of music sparks your creativity the most? Do you listen while you work?
Yes, I always listen to music while I work! Music is so inspiring and can really help me to set the tone when going into a piece.
I have created 3 playlists that I alternate between when working, and I think they will help give a good picture of the various kinds of music I listen to.
The first is called "Blue Skies & Golden Sunshine" - this is a playlist of mostly vintage music that feels like a nostalgic sunny day. It includes music from Roy Orbison, Paul Anka, Nancy Sinatra, Bobby Vinton, The Cranberries, ABBA and Elvis.
The second playlist is called "The Darkness" - this playlist has a lot of moody darkwave, sad songs, and gothic vibes. There's music from Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Cure, Cigarettes After Sex, Ethel Cain, Lebanon Hanover and November Novelet.
The third playlist is called "Hot Problems" - a playlist for the girlypops. Here I have a lot of Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, MARINA, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lana Del Rey and Remy Bond.
What’s your favorite animal to illustrate, and why does it inspire you?
Oh, this is a tough one! It changes a lot, I go through phases! I think it is currently swans and Siamese cats. My love of swans is hard for me to explain. There was a time, as a kid, when I lived near a river that always had a bunch of swans. It was a hard time in my life, and visiting those swans was one of the only moments of beauty I would have in a day. I think they are still a comfort to me now because of that. I have also always had a fascination with Swan Lake, and in turn, the movie Black Swan, which is one of my favs!
Siamese cats will always be a muse as well, because I have had rescued Siamese cats my whole life! They are such beauties and such funny characters. I often portray them as imps, because that is what they are in real life.
Do you have any creative rituals or habits that help you get into the flow?
I always have a cup of tea by my side when working, and that really has become a ritual. It's calming and comforting, and helps me to feel like I can zone in on what I am working on. I love all kinds of tea, but my favourite would be Heavenly Cream by Sloane Tea.
What’s your dream project—something you haven’t done yet but would love to create one day?
I would LOVE to collab on an eyeshadow palette someday! I think it would be so cool to create an ethereal illustration for the packaging, and then pick eyeshadow colours for the palette inspired by that piece. Colour is such a huge part of my work - and people are always commenting how much they love my colour palettes! I really think I could put together the most dark and dreamy eyeshadow palette ever.
If your art had a signature scent, what would it smell like?
Definitely a heavy jammy rose scent. With undertones of earl grey tea, soft vanilla, bright lilac, and a wisp of smoke.
If you had to pick a favorite piece from our collection, which one would it be? What draws you to it?
Another hard question!! Of course, I love them all. But I am particularly fond of the Sugar Goth Ring and the Precious Darkling Pendant.
The ring is just so perfect! To be able to wear my little gothic cake on my finger is just so cool. It is such a sweet piece, and all the details were captured flawlessly.
The Precious Darkling Pendant is a great statement piece. It's so striking and unmistakably bat-shaped. It adds a spooky touch to any outfit you pair it with, and I really love that about it!
The Collection
This collection has been a true labor of love and this release brought some of my favorite designs to date; Feisty but cute. Olivia was a dream collaborator, giving her input and approval on my designs along the way and naming all the final pieces herself. And even bringing some pieces back into her Art as jewelry drawings;
I think we've truly brought something magical into this world.
What’s Next?
This collaboration isn’t over yet. While the first collection has made its way to so many of you, I’ve also been gathering a selection of gemstones and sketching one-of-a-kind and limited pieces. I wanted to make sure the first wave of orders was in your hands before diving back into creation mode—but now, it’s almost time.
If you loved the first part of this sweet and eerie collaboration, keep an eye on Midnight Society emails—Part II is coming, and you won’t want to miss it.
